DecemÂber 2023:
2024 and the assoÂciÂated uncerÂtainÂties are castÂing their shadÂows ahead: FISI drops to 90 index points.
This DecemÂber, the European Foundry Industry SenÂtiÂment IndicÂator (FISI) records a notÂable decrease, markÂing a downÂturn in the index to 90 points. This adjustÂment negÂates the posÂitÂive
develÂopÂment observed in NovemÂber, as the index experÂiÂences a decline of 1.6 points, setÂtling at 90.0 comÂpared to 91.6 the preÂviÂous month.
As we conÂclude the year 2023, it becomes evidÂent that the foundry industry conÂtinÂues to face chalÂlenges. The FISI, which comÂmenced the year at 103.1 index points in JanuÂary, now reflects the impact of perÂsistÂent chalÂlenges such as high energy prices, geoÂpolÂitÂical tenÂsions and conÂflicts, (skilled) labour shortÂages, and uncerÂtainÂties surÂroundÂing the availÂabÂilÂity of raw
materÂiÂals. These factors colÂlectÂively exert subÂstanÂtial presÂsure on foundries across Europe. DesÂpite strugÂgling with these ongoÂing headÂwinds, the foundry industry exhibÂits remarkÂable
resiÂliÂence. Foundries throughÂout Europe are navÂigÂatÂing through the comÂplexÂitÂies, demonÂstratÂing their adaptÂabÂilÂity in the face of adversitÂies. It is worth notÂing that the absence of
subÂsidies and supÂport from national and European poliÂcyÂmakers adds to the industry’s burÂden. In conÂtrast, comÂpetÂitÂors in Asia and the United States find themÂselves in relÂatÂively
advantÂageÂous posÂiÂtions, encounÂterÂing fewer chalÂlenges in these areas.

MeanÂwhile the BusiÂness CliÂmate IndicÂator (BCI) stands at ‑0.45 index points in DecemÂber. This marks the sixth conÂsecÂutÂive time that the BCI is below the critÂical threshold of 0 index
points. The index decreased once again by 0.06 points from ‑0.39 in NovemÂber. This month the negÂatÂive BCI can be attribÂuted as in the preÂviÂous month mainly to the situÂation of the
assessÂment of export order-book levels. The ongoÂing geoÂpolÂitÂical tenÂsions in both the Middle East and Ukraine are playÂing a pivotal role in proÂpelling this development.
The FISI – European Foundry Industry SenÂtiÂment IndicÂator – is the earliÂest availÂable comÂposÂite indicÂator providÂing informÂaÂtion on the European foundry industry perÂformÂance. It is pubÂlished by EFF the European Foundry AssoÂciÂation every month and is based on surÂvey responses of the European foundry industry. The EFF memÂbers are asked to give their assessÂment of the curÂrent busiÂness situÂation in the foundry secÂtor and their expectÂaÂtions for the next six months.
The BCI – BusiÂness CliÂmate IndicÂator – is an indicÂator pubÂlished by the European ComÂmisÂsion. The BCI evalÂuÂates develÂopÂment conÂdiÂtions of the manÂuÂfacÂturÂing secÂtor in the euro area every month and uses five balÂances of opinÂion from industry surÂvey: proÂducÂtion trends, order books, export order books, stocks and proÂducÂtion expectations.
